Chili Feeds and Family Feuds

For the first time since I’ve been here, the library will be present and accounted for at the Annual Chamber Chili Cook-Off. While we kicked around the idea last year, I’m not a big T.V. watcher, so the sitcom idea was out of my league. Game shows, though? That we can do.

Especially since we’re not the ones responsible for the chili. That honor goes to Deb Brockberg, Pipestone Area Friends of the Library member and entrant for the contest.

The theme, however, is our responsibility and requires us to cook up something fun–a process which will require a little help from you. To get our answers for Family Feud, we ask everyone to please fill out the survey below before Monday, November 18.

In return for a completed survey, we will waive your accumulated late fees from Meinders Community Library. This does not include fees associated with lost or damaged items or late fees accrued at other libraries.

So, if you are in possession of a library book or movie that you’ve been afraid to return because it’s fourteen years past due, now is your chance to drop it off at the library fine-free! You don’t even have to come into the library if you don’t want to. All you have to do is answer the nine questions and leave them inside your book in the drop box so we know which account to clear.

If you are unsure whether you have a late fee or not, simply put your name on a sheet of paper, answer the following questions, and drop it off at the library. You can also answer our questions via the contact form below. Regardless of how you send us your answers, your name will not be included in the game.

  1. What item do you most frequently check out from the library?
  2. When is the best time to visit the library?
  3. Why do you visit the library?
  4. What do you think librarians do all day?
  5. What do you need to get a library card?
  6. What is the most unique item you can check out at the library?
  7. What kinds of books do you read?
  8. What is the best part about the library?
  9. What is the most essential ingredient in a good chili?

Thank you for your response. ✨

Thanks so much for your input (and returning your library materials). If you want to find out what the Survey Says, please join us at the 14th Annual Chamber Chili Cook-Off & Silent Auction Fundraiser on November 21 at the Pipestone Country Club. Your participation is greatly appreciated. Not to mention, you get to enjoy a fantastic night out filled with food, fun, and friends!

The only feuds allowed will be at the Pipestone Area Friends of the Library chili table.

PAS School Perception Survey

Dear Community Members,

Right now, you have an opportunity to help shape the future of our schools. An online survey is currently available for community members to share their perceptions of Pipestone Area Schools. Survey information will help inform the next step in the strategic planning process.

Pipestone Area Schools conducts strategic planning; district looking for community input via survey.

Pipestone Area Schools is in the initial stage of developing a strategic plan. The school board is working with the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) to provide guidance and assist with the planning.

The school board is seeking input from school district residents to help in identifying the school district’s strengths and areas for improvement. School district residents can give the school board feedback by completing the “Pipestone Area Schools Strategic Planning Survey.” The information gathered from the survey will be analyzed by the MSBA and used to help identify school district strategic priorities.

Click this link to access the “Perception Survey of Pipestone Area Schools.” The survey is open until 3:00 p.m. on November 8, 2019.

Our students matter, and so does your input~ jody

Making Connections

Meinders Library is a hopping place this morning. Besides our second graders trying their hands at the escape room and creating awesome artwork in the STEAM Room, a typical Friday morning brings our fifth grade classes together for some socialization, game playing, book reading, and fun.

Today’s project: making connections at our newest Stick Together. This cool project allows participants to match one inch stickers to the labeled box on the giant poster.

Guesses for the emerging picture?

  • A fire
  • A turkey
  • A butterfly

Stop by and add your stickers to help us develope this community project.

Past pictures include an underwater scene and a tiger. Both can be seen decorating the walls of our computer lab and makerspace.

We love collaboration!

Spooked At Meinders

Halloween came early to Meinders Community Library in the form of our newest escape room adventure. It was the first time we hosted an escape room in the entire library. Set up like Clue, teams had to use the process of elimination to find everything from floating books to howling wolves, as well as a series of horror-writing authors past.

Over 175 brave souls from 2nd grade to granny-aged joined in the mischief at Meinders Mansion where Mr. Boddy was found scared to death.

Who did it, where, and how were the questions that 15 teams answered over the course of a week. Read on to find out how they fared!

Not Pictured, but still important!

  • Stacy’s Stars (astronomy class)
  • Wendi Weber’s 2nd Grade Class
  • Jen Evans’ 2nd Grade Class
  • Jennifer Farrell’s 2nd Grade Class (will go through November 1st)
  • Kris Reinhard’s 2nd Grade Class (will go through November 1st)

Tramping through the dark with lanterns and flashlights was a definite highlight for many. The experience has definitely inspired us to consider another full library escape room in the future. Until then, we’ll keep the monsters locked out of the library and firmly between the covers of our mystery novels!

Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Come Write-In at Meinders Library

Shield-Nano-Side-Blue-Brown-RGB-HiResNaNoWriMo is an online contest/support network that helps writers around the world furiously pen their way toward creating the next Great American Novel.

During the month of November, area writers will gather together at Write-In locations to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Meinders Community Library (and at least one of the librarians here) will be competing in this quirky, yet satisfying contest.

Several high profile novels are a product of NaNoWriMo, proving that hard work and a quirky contest can pay off. You won’t know if you are capable of joining the ranks of published writers unless and until you get that first draft done.

Successful NaNo authors include:

  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
  • Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.
  • Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.
  • 6, 7, and 8. Cinder , Scarlet and Cress by Marissa Meyer.

If you–or someone you know–has always wanted to write a novel, you/they are welcome to join us for camaraderie, light refreshments, support, writing prompts, and time away from the rest of the world to write.

For young writers, NaNoWriMo offers the Young Writers Program where youth get to set their own writing goals for the month.

Kick off for National Novel Writing Month will take place on Friday, November 1, at noon. Over the lunch hour, writers can stop by, sign up, write, talk, and get started on their NaNo project.

The dates for Meinders Write-Ins are as follows:

  • Sundays November 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm
  • Thursdays November 7, 14, and 21 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

If NaNoWriMo feels a bit daunting, we also offer a writer’s group that meets on the second Thursday of each month from 6:30pm-8:00pm. You are welcome to stop by and immerse yourself in the written word.

Click here for more information on NaNoWriMo.
