Come Write In! at Meinders Library

As autumn falls into the cozy rhythm of hot drinks and cold nights, writers across the globe challenge themselves to the unthinkable–write a novel in 30 days.

People write for a variety of reasons: health, wealth, passing along family histories and traditions, or just because. As people, we have opinions and experiences we want to share. We have personal demons we want to slay. We have imaginations that don’t sleep. All of these are valid reasons to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard.

To the roughly 80% of Americans who claim they want to write a book “someday”, let someday start today.

Whether you want to write for publication or wish to remain in the writing closet for life, there is a sense of nobility and accomplishment from tackling the written word. Short stories, poetry, novels, articles, memoirs, or nitty gritty nonfiction, the writing form is endless, as are the ways in which individual writers string the 26 letters of the alphabet together–creating words, sentences, and pages.

Chapter upon chapter we become known to ourselves and to our readers. Writing is exhilarating, frustrating, and addictive.

Lucky for you, November 1st marks the start of National Novel Writing Month. Now is the time to explore your inner writer and join the ranks of like-minded people furiously penning their way toward 50,000 words.

Throughout the month, Meinders Library will host writing events beginning tonight at 6:00pm.

We invite anyone interested in the art of writing to join us this month on any or all of the following dates, regardless of whether you join NaNoWriMo or not:

  • Thursday November 1 @ 6:00pm
  • Sundays from 3:00pm-5:00pm
  • Wednesdays from 6:00pm-8pm

Light refreshments will be served and prizes can be earned during these informal and fun meet-ups with other area writers. All ages welcome.

For more information, please use the contact form below or stop in the library and talk with Emily or Jody.

Writers, Beware. NaNoWriMo is just around the corner!

If you are in the 87% of adults who claim they want to write a novel someday, this post is for you.

Actually, November is for you.

In the writing arena, November is National Novel Writing Month. It is a crazy 30 days where wanna be, budding, and experienced writers put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and turn ideas into novels.

Over the course of the past decade, I’ve participated in NaNoWriMo a handful of times. In fact, my published novel is a product of that frenzied 26 days when I somehow managed to string together over 65,000 words that actually made sense. Granted it took me years to edit it and find a publisher, but none of that can occur before the creation of that first draft.

And that, my writer friends, is what November is all about.

So, if you have ever claimed (publicly or only to yourself in the confines of the darkest shadows) that you would like to write a novel someday, someday is now. Check out nanowrimo.org and join the fun. I am!

If you know anyone who would like more info on NaNoWriMo or writing in general, please direct them to me.

Our library has officially declared itself a Come Write In! destination, meaning we will be hosting several writing events over the course of the month to help motivate writers in their brave new journey into the written word.

The best part? It’s free and it’s fun.

Fall Events Set

Overall, our programming goals at the library are simple: to bring community members together to learn, share and enjoy common experiences.

This fall, our focus is on you. Through a variety of speakers and events, we aim to show that everyone’s story is unique, important and worthy of being noted. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to become an author. Rather, it means everyone needs to become the author of their own lives.

That’s the beauty of living. Every moment provides opportunity. And every opportunity provides a moment for growth.

Here’s how you can grow with us this fall:

  • Join the newly formed writer’s group on the 2nd Monday at 6:30pm.
  • Attend Doug Wolter’s author event this Saturday at 2:00pm.
  • Stop by on October 14 for our Patron Appreciation Open House between 2:00 and 4:00pm.
  • Read Andy Steiner’s book, How to Survive: the Extraordinary Resilience of Ordinary People, and discuss it with others at our Community Read book discussion at 6:00pm on October 30.
  • Sign up for Clue-less: an Escape Room Adventure and figure out who dunnit, with what and where. Pre-registration is required and will open on October 2.
  • Learn a new perspective by visiting with journalist and publisher, Andy Wahlberg. He owns Think Piece Publishing–Steiner’s publishing company.
  • Craft with us on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00am-1:00pm. Our first craft club will be held on October 14. Bring your crafting supplies and/or passions to share with other crafty people. We will be using our STEAM Room.
  • Brush up on your work force writing skills on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. From 4:00pm to 6:00pm, this Adult Writing Lab time is the perfect place to hone your resume and cover letter skills. Registration is not required.
  • Encourage your teen to join Teen Time on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 7:00-9:00pm for some supervised fun. (Think Escape Room, Movie Nights, Indoor Golf, etc… and snacks. Always the snacks.)

Still convinced I’m talking about writing your life story? This fall, I might be, as November is National Novel Writing Month. Meinders Library has officially declared itself a Come Write In! location for area writers. Throughout the month of November, we will host several writing sessions, get-togethers, and other crazy writing stuff with the sole purpose of helping you pen the book you always dreamed of writing.

So, if that includes you, please ask Jody all about the ins and outs of NaNoWriMo or check out their website at nanowrimo.org and start outlining your book now.
